Artistic Newborn Baby Photography - Eastbourne

Newborn photography is immensely satisfying - as a photographer I am very aware that I am taking the very first portrait of a person's life.  How can anyone really know personality of this brand new human being at less than 10 days old.  (True newborn shoots need to happen in this very small window to get those gorgeous curled up sleepy baby photographs.)  After 10 days it is too late.

We've all seen the trends of babies with angel wings, babies in barrels, babies on a stack of towels.  They are cute and adorable, but when that baby is your age will they still want their image proudly displayed on their lounge wall?

I am always looking for another way to photograph families and babies to create something different from your average family portrait and a little bit special.  I try to create images that, as a highly personalised piece of fine art, could easily be displayed on the wall of an art gallery.  These images are never going to go out of fashion, they are not shot using the current styling trends.  The emphasis is on lighting, composition and how you feel when you look at the image.

They will always be art.  Beautiful.

Buxted Park Hotel summer wedding

Buxted Park Hotel is one of my favourite Sussex wedding venues.

Not only is it a very beautiful hotel with fantastic grounds ideally suited to wedding photography, the staff are highly efficient, professional and friendly.  Nothing is ever too much trouble.  Everything is handled with a calm efficiency that allows a wedding day to flow beautifully and their master of ceremonies is just fantastic at ensuring the timing is smooth and effortless.  The interior is beautiful with beautiful big windows which let in ample natural light, ideal for indoor photography is the weather turns out to be less than ideal.

Ben and Verity's wedding took place on a gorgeous summer day in July, so we were able to get outside and use the splendid grounds.  Guests enjoyed drinks and canapes on the grass, bride and groom portraits were set against a magnificent country house and blue sky.  The group photographs on the steps were a breeze.

The wedding breakfast took place in a sumptuous banqueting hall with gorgeous chandeliers, high ceilings and big windows.  Later in the day this room is great for the first dance with a good sized dance floor and ample room for a band to set up.

To sound slightly evangelical, there really isn't much more a wedding photographer could ask of a wedding venue....and I can't imagine any bride and groom ever being disappointed regardless of our Great British weather.

Why you need an experienced wedding photographer...

Brides and grooms pray for wall to wall sunshine on their wedding day, but their wedding photographer dreads the concept. What?!

Yes, really, in the UK wedding photographers are more accustomed to shooting in overcast or at least partly cloudy conditions and, while beautiful blue skies look great in a photo, the harsh shadows created by direct sunlight will have many a wedding photographer scratching her/his head in frustration.  On a bright sunny day we look around for shade cast by a building or dense tree. Without it we really need to start thinking.

I like to shoot into the sun by positioning the bride and groom or group with their backs to the sun so nobody is squinting into the sun, they don't have harsh shadows across their faces and they are nicely backlit.

Another major challenge is wind.  I'm happier with a rainy day than a really windy day.  It very, very rarely rains constantly all day long, so at some point in the day there will be an opportunity to nip outside and get some shots.  Wind on the other hand is usually constant and really messes with hair and clothing.

Now, add wind to a bright sunny day and the fun really starts for a wedding photographer, because as surely as eggs are eggs the wind will be blowing in the wrong direction.  You want to shoot into the sun, but the wind is coming from behind the bride and groom or group, which makes the ladies look like they're moshing at a heavy metal concert.  Not a good look for a wedding.

Dave and Jade's wedding in Brighton on a gorgeously hot, sunny day in May that was also incredibly windy is a perfect example.  The venue was a beachfront hotel with the sun shining straight onto the front of the building with no outside space at the back of the hotel for photographs in the shade.  We'd planned photographs in the bandstand, but as luck would have it a wedding was taking place there at the time that we'd set aside for photographs.  So, that left only a very crowded, very sunny, very windy beach.  What do you do?

Cue well trained assistant.  For this shot my assistant, Alicia, battled the wind holding a scrim (frame with lightweight, translucent fabric spread over it) above her head to diffuse the bright sunlight and cast a soft shade over Jade and Dave, thereby eliminating harsh shadows.  I shot from high up aiming down to cut out crowds in the background.

You work with what you have.  In this case that meant including the crowds, because it was rather lovely that the beach erupted with applause for the newlyweds when we first appeared.

You find a small bit of ground not occupied by people, with just the sea in the background (and your hard working assistant clears away the litter and used throw-away bbq's ready for the shot) and fantastic lines created by the architecture and horizon to lead your eye to the happy couple.

And then finally....you never give up.  You step outside after the wedding breakfast and speeches are over and you find that most people have gone home, the wind has died down and you're into the "magic hour" or "golden hour".  That time of day photographers love, when the sun is lower in the sky and the light turns a beautiful golden colour.

And you get the shot.

Gorgeous newborn baby boy in the studio

I've just realised that it is ages since I wrote about a newborn baby portrait shoot, so here are a few images of the adorable little Ethan at 3 weeks old who came to the studio for baby portraits and photographs with his parents, Helen and Neal, for their first family portrait.

Ethan was very happy to sleep through the first half of the portrait shoot, so I was able to capture this photograph of a comfy, contented baby...and then a few of him inspecting the world once he'd woken up.

We could have straightened his hair for a neat and tidy baby photo...but then he wouldn't look quite so incredibly adorable.

This last photo is how I like to photograph new families - up nice and close and personal.  I love the interaction between Ethan and his parents.  This shows that you don't have to be looking at the camera to get a great portrait.

Forget diamonds...shadows are a girl's best friend!

I have been so busy in the studio over the last couple of months that I've not had any time left to write about the photographs I've been taking.  Now that I am on top of all the very exciting developments in my studio all the sawdust and daily tidying up has been well worth it!  I now have a shooting area perfectly designed for how I like to shoot and light a scene to create dramatic, striking images. The week ahead is going to be hard work and so much fun as each day I will be working on bringing my ideas to "film" (or in the digital age, I should probably say pixel) and fine tuning concepts with some lovely volunteer ladies.

Which brings me to the title of my post ...in the world of boudoir, shadows are definitely a girl's best friend!  My approach to boudoir is to light a scene for the shadows, rather than just light it from every angle, because it is the shadows that create the mood and sexiness of a boudoir portrait.  When the imagination is made to work a photograph is so much more tasteful, enticing, mysterious and ultimately alluring.

Shadows are brilliant for sculpting the body - making more of the curves you want to show off and cleverly hiding the others.  We all have them...even supermodels, although to a lesser degree of course.  They've also spent a long time learning to work the angles of their bodies...and I've spent a long time developing skills to capture my clients looking their best.

So, in my boudoir photography studio shadows create mood, mystery and most importantly beauty.

PS - I was only joking about the diamonds...we all love a little sparkle!

Richard & Karen's wedding at Findon Manor

Who would have expected such a lovely day in March?  It was beautiful, warm and sunny.  Just like the personalities at Richard and Karen's intimate wedding held at Findon Manor Hotel, Findon in West Sussex.  Their day was filled with laughter from beginning to end and I so enjoyed photographing a couple that so obviously made for each other.

Findon Manor is a lovely venue and the staff are incredibly helpful and professional.  From a wedding photographer's point of the view the venue is fantastic because of all the big windows and French doors allowing plenty of natural light to filter in.

Here are few photographs showing a few details, groups and the atmosphere of their lovely wedding....

Bridal Boudoir Portrait

Boudoir photography is a wide field and offers many styles depending on who is being photographed and what feeling she would like to portray.  Below are a few images from a bridal boudoir portrait session in my Eastbourne studio.  They demonstrate a softer, restrained boudoir photography style, versus the more moody lingerie sessions.  An almost bare shoulder and contemplative look is equally alluring and suggestive as any flirty glance into the lens while laid out on a chaise longue.  Boudoir photography is all about suggestion, titillation and imagination.

I believe both styles of boudoir photography are flattering, sexy and feminine, not to mention empowering and fun!

Boudoir Photography in Eastbourne

I've had a wonderful time playing around in my new Eastbourne studio getting used to the space - how best to photograph in it, what works well and what needs modifying (like getting a blind for one of the Velux windows to block out that wonderful Eastbourne sunshine during a shoot).

One of these "settling in shoots" was a boudoir portrait session.  Here are a few images from that session.

Lisa & Nezir's Eastbourne wedding

Who would have thought that on the 23rd of February we would have gorgeous sunshine and warmth (well, really warm for winter anyway)?  Such a lovely day in Eastbourne for Lisa & Nezir's wedding.

When I first met Lisa's parents, who helped arrange the wedding, I knew this would be a great wedding and it was a perfect start to the 2012 wedding season with.  Fantastic, devoted couple, family and guests, many of whom (including the bride and groom) flew in from Norway for the event.  I thoroughly enjoyed capturing their special day.

Here are a few images of their wedding.

It wouldn't be an Eastbourne wedding without a few bride and groom photographs on the beach.

I am sure Lisa and Nezir will have a very happy life together.  All the best for the future!
